I decided to sell the empeg demo car since we no longer have a use for it. This is an opportuntity to acquire a revolutionary model of vehicle with a history entwined with a revolutionary model of in car entertainment.

Mercedes A140 Avant Garde 5 door hatchback
1999 T Plate
35K miles
Ocean Blue
5 speed manual
Right hand drive
Passenger, driver and side impact air bags
Air conditioning
Half leather seats
Alarm and immobiliser
Mercedes alloy wheels
New MoT on purchase
Removable seats for incredible carrying capacity

Cambridge Car Audio Professional Install:
- Kicker 404 4 Channel amp for the cabin
- Kicker 1252 Bridged amp for the sub
- 8" Infinity Kappa components in the front doors
- 6" Infinity Reference in the rear doors
- 10" Infinity Kappa sub-woofer in the boot in sealed enclosure
- Custom removable amp rack forms OE-look boot floor with perspex viewing panel (carpeted cover)
- Mark 2 sled (with Ethernet) mounted in dash, empeg tuner, Sony Stalk
- Wired for serial and Ethernet from dash to boot, cabling for Apple Airport or similar 802.11 hub

Generally very good condition apart from paint damage (scratches) in a couple of places (front near side wing, rear bumper). I can get this fixed to original specification but the price reflects the current condition. Mileage is low for the year. Fully serviced by Mercedes-Benz Cambridge.

As an empeg BBS special I will include the stereo install at no extra charge if you pay the asking price of UKP 5995. The empeg head unit is not included in this price but the sled and all other audio components are included. I will also provide the original Mercedes tape player in case you wish to remove the empeg at any time.

Email me if you're interested: rob@empeg.com

Also very safe - air bags all over the place, some kind of side protection system, an engine which slides under the floor in a head on crash and so forth.

Before you decide to import a car or car parts into the United States, you should ensure that the car or car parts conform to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. These agencies have very detailed requirements that can make importing a vehicle difficult, if not impossible, for some vehicles that were not originally manufactured for the U.S. market.

Nonconforming vehicles less than 25 years old entering the United States must be brought into compliance, exported, or destroyed. Cars over 25 years old are exempt from EPA and DOT requirements, although you will still need to obtain and prepare EPA and DOT paperwork to provide to a Customs inspector in order to clear your car through Customs.

From a Customs standpoint, you must file an entry on the car to receive the entry summary document CF 7501. Filing an entry is initiated by declaring the car to a Customs inspector when you enter the U.S. If your paperwork is in order, the inspector will help you file the entry at the border. If you are not prepared, the inspector may advise you to file the entry at a Customs port near your residence - however, in many cases the closest port could be 1-3 hours from your home, so it is in your best interest to be prepared to file the entry when you initially bring the car into the U.S. Without a copy of the Customs entry form, you will not be able to register the car in the U.S.

Prior to filing your entry with Customs, ensure you have valid proof of ownership, which is an original certificate of title, or a certified copy of the original. Ensure you have documentation, such as a manufacturer's letter, stating that the car conforms to EPA and DOT standards, as well as a completed EPA form 3250-1 and DOT form HS-7. (If the vehicle has stickers on the engine (EPA) and inside the drivers-side door (DOT) stating that the car was manufactured to U.S. standards, you will not need a manufacturers letter. Some vehicles are listed by make, model, and year on the DOT and EPA web sites as conforming. If your vehicle is one of those, that would also negate the need for a manufacturers letter.)

If the vehicle has not been in your household for at least one year, you will be required to pay 2.5% duty, which is assessed based on the purchase price or blue book value.

It is illegal to bring a car into the U.S. and sell it without first entering it through Customs. If you purchase a car that was brought into the U.S. and sold without being properly entered through Customs, that car is subject to seizure. NEVER purchase a used car in the U.S. if the owner cannot show that it is currently registered in the U.S. and demonstrate that it conforms to DOT and EPA standards. If purchasing a car from a dealer, they should handle registration for you, if they don't, the purchase should be contingent on your successful registration of the vehicle. (We get many calls from people who unwittingly purchased a vehicle that had been brought into the U.S. and then illegally sold. Buyer beware.)

The EPA has a detailed automotive facts manual describing emission requirements for imported vehicles. You can get a copy of this manual, entitled the Automotive Imports Facts Manual, (order #EPA420B94006) or other information about importing motor vehicles by calling the EPA import hotline at (202) 564-9660. You can also communicate by fax at (202) 564-9596 or by writing to the Environmental Protection Agency, Manufactures Operations division 6405-J, Investigation/Imports Section, 401 M Street, SW Washington, D.C. 20460. You will need a copy of EPA form 3520-1, which is available on their website, to enter the car.

DOT enforces safety standards for vehicles. Nonconforming cars must be brought into conformance before they are eligible for entry. This process can be extremely expensive. Contact them for more information at 1-800-424-9393, or visit their website. You will need to obtain form HS-7, which is also available from that site.

For additional information on how to bring a car or car parts into the U.S. for personal use, please reference our brochure, "Importing a Vehicle."
If you intend to import cars and car parts for resale, you should read our publication entitled "Importing Into the United States" available in the Publications section of our web site.

You'll probably get told to use a lot of bubble wrap and get given a box that is about 4m x 4m x 1m probably
You could always drive it back and use a ferry. Be sloooooooooooow though.
My sister bought her A Class in Germany and drove it back to the UK. Even with all of the upgrades necessary to get it up to standard UK spec and the ferry and fuel costs, it still came out to be significantly under what it cost in the UK.

But at some point, won't your choice be between overstaying your Visa and being hunted by the INS, or becoming a citizen and then being hassled for your car by the EPA/DOT?

i've been in the US for 17yrs as a permanent resident. no benifit of being a citizen. i get all the protections, execpt i cant vote and cant be selected for jury duty. actually, scratch that. i cant get top-secret clearance if i join the military/work for military contrats, but if i do join, then i just have to wait a year til citizenship is granted. private sector pays more anyways, so i'll stick to my situation.

Pitty it is wrong-handed, otherwise one would be tempted. I was kind of looking to upgrade from Renault Twingo to Mercedes Twingo (), but the new ones are on expensive side...

As Image says, there is no benefit from becoming a citizen, I am married to a US girl, so will apply for my Green card once this visa starts running out (it is currently a 3 year visa, and can be extended for another 4 years).

I figure in the 6 years I have I will enjoy the car, and if by then it has to be exported I will look at Nobles or Ultimas, unless TVR have actually got their finger out and are selling cars here.

No, if you just marry a US citizen you get nothing - you cannot even work without a visa or green card.

Of course being married to a US citizen gets you looked on more favourably when you are applying for green cards, residency and citizenship, but it is still all up to you to apply for them.

Also, I did hear that having an American child (just needs to be born here) makes things easier still.

I'd apply NOW. I know several people applying for green cards/citizenship (my wife included) that have been waiting for well over 1.5 years for responses from the INS. They are severly backlogged, especially since 9/11.

Mark,

I have 6 years left with an L1 visa, so applying now is a little premature. Apparently the way the company here does it is they apply for your green card at the same time as your final L1 extension, that gives them 2.5 years to get it sorted.

Yep. At this point my application to remove the conditional status on my permanent residency has been lost in the system for 16months. My green card expired 14 months ago, and the 12 month extension letter that they sent me has itself expired. This is security in action for you. Supposedly I can go to my nearest INS center and get my passport stamped to further officially extend it, but so far I've been unable to muster the motivation required to sit in line hell for 4 hours. What is really gruelling is the fact that they don't even seem able to put out a circular mailing to keep people updated. I'm sure that their phone system and offices would be far more efficient if they weren't being clogged by people like me just trying to find out what they need to do next in order to remain legal.

It's a joke.

Also, I did hear that having an American child (just needs to be born here) makes things easier still.
There are a few more requirements to "just being born here" for a child to have US citizenship, IIRC. I thought I heard somewhere that they were having trouble with illegal aliens coming in to have kids, then going back home, just so that their kids had US citizenship, so they changed the rules for that.

My mom is American, but I was never registered with the US consulate when I was born (so I wouldn't have to face conscription in the future). When my visa ran out here, I just applied for my US passport, which required my birth certificate, my mom's birth certificate, her wedding certificate (I wouldn't have been able to get citizenship if I had been born out of wedlock), plus evidence of her having lived in the US for 10 years prior to my birth (i.e. high school and university transcripts -- tax returns would have sufficed, as well). It took two weeks to get my passport, and now I can't wait 'til November '04, so I can go vote for the most popular person not named Bush.

That reminds me. There are 4 requirements to be president of the US. You have to be a born citizen, at least 35 years of age, have lived in the country for the last 14 years, and?

Greetings!

That's about it, unless you count the modern addition of some significant personality / moral / intellectual flaw. Unless you count reciting the Oath of Office.

You can read all about it here.

Amendment XXII - Presidential term limits. Ratified 2/27/1951. History

1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

2. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.
