That is the Issue The Big Guys already have the Color Screens, the DVD movies, ther GPS and Nav systems, but there Mp3 Interfaces Sucks Rocks compaired to the Empeg

Sony and Pioneer have 10 Gig None-upgradable units you need to rip from the car ( Barf me out gag me with a spoon)

Kenwood has the PhatNoise box (You can upload to that from your home computer)

Alpine has a Cartage Style unit that is removable and you upload to it from your computer

Empeg has the Best Menu driven Interface and the easy of use no one comes close to, but even if it had a GPS how usefull would it be on a 4 Bit blue Screen

I'm not sure if you've followed the GPS projects, but they're pretty useful now, and becoming more useful. Granted, if you want a rich, detailed maps, look elsewhere, but if getting from point A to point B is your goal, then gpsapp is starting to evolve into something very nice.

Well, my gps-enabled empeg got me to and from the NY meet last weekend. The only problem that I had was due to bad mapsonus routing. Had I simply printed the mapsonus route I would have been screwed, but since I had GPS I just meandered my way towards the dot. It worked.

I know there are a bunch of GPS Projects using the extra cpu cycles on the Empeg to port out to a PDA it seem cumbersome and clunkie
GPSapp does not port out to a PDA. It's all self-contained within the empeg. The only external part is the GPS receiver/antenna, which can often be mounted stealth. Mine is buried inside my dashboard and works fine.

Agreed, the empeg screen isn't the best for displaying maps, and the GPSapp software is still a work in progress (especially in terms of getting good map data into it). But if you've already got the empeg, and space is a concern, then it's a great option for doing zero-footprint, low-cost GPS.

Okay, I would like to revise the unwritten semantics of my statement to read "please let me beat Fabris," as in "beat with a stick."

That would be my ideal setup, when I get some money. Empeg in one din slot, and one of the units with fold-out LCD screen for GPS, TV, DVD, PS2, Xbox, and the like in the other din slot.

Everything you could ever want.

Sorry if this seems really rude! But I'm not sure what your point is? You seem really pissed off that your car stereo isn't a GPS?! Well sorry, its not! Its a car stereo.

Correct. You have to grab a route from the web before you start your trip, and send that route to the player with FTP. Using some clever scripting and a shell extension in the registry, I've gotten it down to just a few clicks.

But it only has to be this way "for now". They're working on how to get the map data into it more easily and in more useful ways. Like I said, it's a work in progress.

I didn't get that impression. He's just asking about features. I don't think that "these features do not match my needs" constitues "pissed off".

Thanks Tony,

No I am not pissed off at all I have had my EMpeg for nearly 3 years I love it I don't want to part with it but my car is small and I need other options,

A MK3 with gps would fit the bill and I won't care if it cost 7000 Bucks if it was a good as my Old Blue MK2, I am jsut annoyed that I have to choose between waiting 4 years or loosing my Empeg for something that is not half as nice, but has the other options I need in my job.

I've been considering something similar. Crutchfield catalog lists a bunch of fold out screens, but they all only talk about DVD playback, not integrated GPS. And most of them are JUST the screen in that slot, you need yet another slot for the DVD drive.

I once saw a really nice GPS system which had a "3D" option, where it would show you sort of a "chase helicopter" view of the map and your route. It was the clearest and easiest to follow system. In some cities, it even had major building landmarks a la flight simulator. Which one was that? Having something like that would be awesome.

So if I really wanted to go all-out on such a system, what's available out there? Anyone got links?

For $7000 you could find another car with 2 DIN slots and get your stereo removed and reinstalled.

I take that back Best best would be a Empeg Mod that would give you RCA output so you could pipe it to a Screen Screw the Empeg knock off boxes and get the real thing

That Kenwood system looks pretty neat. I liked this:

AUDIO FEATURES
- Speaker Connection for Supplied Speaker
This means I don't have to pipe it into the AUX to hear it work. I can still hear the turn directions even if I've got the music going.

Yep Double layers of DynaMat Ultra on the floors doors and Roof, 4 pairs of Diamond Audio Hex s600 Speakers, Custom Center Console for my Pioneer DEQ-9200 and a bunch of Extra junk.

BTW how come I can't seem to find the "Quote" button?

I'm hoping for a TTS enabled GPSapp.

So it can tell me to turn left instead of right that much more clearly?

Of course, that little problem should be taken care of pretty soon. Jan and I found the root of what was causing that problem. Sometimes the map data has very small errors in it, making an intersection look like a tiny little loop only a few feet wide instead of a clean turn. Seems like a clean turn when zoomed out at the proper distance, but at a very small scale, there's noise that needs to be corrected somewhere in the process.

I agree, though, it would be cool to have GPSapp do voice overlay, especially if you could leave it on the player screens and have the voices come up in the mix.

In fact, I was thinking that a nice addition to GPSapp would be a pop-up mode which allowed you to stay mostly on the music screen and have it pop up only near turns.

Best Bet would be a RCA Video Output from the Empeg (I don't care if it is only 4 bit) and Plug that into the Aux Input of one of the DVD changers that have NAv and GPS, then hit the Goodwill stores for a Old IR Rabbit (IR remote Extender) so you can use the Empeg remote and keep the Empeg Mounted under a chair or in the trunk.

LOL. I decided that I wasn't going to mention that issue...

Yeah, I've been thinking a bit about future GPSapp 'modes' recently. Having used GPSapp 'for real' to navigate a few previously unknown routes last weekend, I got a better handle on some of the current quirks and what I'd like to see, and yes, a background mode with auto-wake near waypoint would be one of them. TTS and/or beeps would be another. There's a whole load of ideas which really belong in a different thread. I have to run out right now, but remind me if I haven't created a suitable thread by the morning!
