Just wanted to note i couldn't apply the v2 final upgrade over serial while my player was docked in Mlord's dock. I'm guessing it's something with the serial speed being set to car speed or something. Do it out of dock and it works fine. Mark? Quick explanation? =]

Greetings!

Well, yes. That is to be expected. The upgrade process requires the external (undocked) configuration, based on some code optimization that does not check for upgrades when in a car configuration. Software (hijack) will not fake this out.

If you have a dead power supply, though, and cut off the plug, you can insert this into the dock and perform upgrades through it. I know - trust me... The physical presence of the plug overrides the upgrade (skip) at boot.

yeah... i figured as much. i just thought Mark might have played some trickery... since the empeg thinks it's on AC in his dock, i figured that the empeg would also look for the upgrade. But i guess the physical presence of the plug is necessary.

The upgrade process is started by firmware on the empeg that's run before the kernel is loaded. It checks the AC/DC status itself based on the position of the leaf switch inside the AC power socket (it's not actually AC at that point, but you know what I mean). There's not any way to modify this code without physical changes to the empeg, so there's not really any way to change this.

I suppose it might be possible to change the socket in the empeg so that the leaf switch is replaced with a reed switch that could be activated by a magnet or solenoid inside the dock.

What about just using the ethernet updater (that I haven't looked at at all yet)?

You know, I should beef up the text of the FAQ entry so that part is made more clear.
