I ordered my empeg sunday night, and got an email confirming that I ordered. Am I to expect a shipping confirmation shortly with a tracking number? I want to know for sure my credit card went through.

sales@empeg.com is the place to ask that sort of thing.

But, yes, your player shipped today and you'll get an email confirmation soon.

Ditto for me. I ordered Saturday night, it shipped today, I'll probably get it installed next week. You have no idea how happy I'll be to get rid of the tape deck in my car.

OK, now you've done it. Now I have to sit here all night, thinking that MAYBE it'll be here by tomorrow...

As it is, one of the guys I share an office with is getting sick of seeing the FedEx screen with tracking info...

I'll be installing mine over lunch break if it comes tomorrow morning. I've got everything prepped and ready...

Are you sure? No stereo installation I've ever done has gone that quickly. Don't rush it.

Replacing an mk1 with an mk2 can be done over a luch-break
(Depends also, of course, how long your lunch takes . . . )

Tony,
Sure it can. See my previous post about rushing my crossover install and snapping off the circuit board...

Actually, it really can be done. I'll just have to take a long lunch, but I figure I can take my dash apart (including removing the current stereo) in about 3 minutes (it's three 7mm bolts, two wiring connectors, and two more 7mm bolts total.)

I wouldn't dream of rushing it. Since I generally get to work 30 minutes early and leave anywhere from 1 to 3 hours late, I can have a bit extra at lunch if I ask nicely.

I installed my autopc with changer and gps in 4 hours. Not bad considering how difficult it is to install. Only problem is I have to re-do everything when the empeg comes :0) I will have to somehow create a space for it because I am leaving in my autopc. Any ideas for a 97 ford f150?

Probably that God has to wait for his queue number to come around just like everyone else...

Of course, that looks like a right old tantrum brewing in Florida!!

*ROFL*!!!

Well, the install took all of 8 minutes... And only that long because I forgot to take out my old sleeve first (the Alpine uses a 1/4 sleeve that the unit slides through.

I'll take it apart this weekend (the dash, not the empeg) and probably use a couple of tiny screws through the empeg's sleeve to get it to sit tighter. I have a DIN and a quarter dash opening (yay GM) and made a custom mounting kit to fit my DIN head unit and 1/2DIN crossover into the dash. Now I don't get enough friction to keep the empeg sleeve in as tight as I'd like. I can grip on three sides, but it's a different fit than the alpine was.

Anyways, i LOVE it! The green plate is much brighter than the red one...

I'm currently dumping mp3's to it right now.

Hurricaine update: Looks like it's still on the path, but shouldn't pass directly overhead (yet...)

Likewise, mine shipped Tuesday and I'm now holding it on Wednesday. Sadly, the switched Ethernet we have at work doesn't seem to jive well with emplode (broadcast packets generally don't work, so emplode can't find my Empeg), so I have to wait until I get home to play with it. It looks quite pretty, at any rate.

Stupid feature request (or question for folks in the know):

At home, I have DHCP set up and I presume everything will magically work. At the office, I'd probably have to give the Empeg a static IP address. Is there some way to (a) have the Empeg display its current network settings on its front panel and (b) is there some way to configure the Empeg to have different network profiles (do this at home, do this at work, and toggle them from the usual menu displays)?

How long did it take you guys to recieve tracking info after your order was placed? Just curious. I ordered mine on Tuesday morning... damn, i'm just being impatient... which is damn near impossible not to be after wanting something for a year! I'm just trying to figure out if i didn't recieve the email, or if it hasn't been sent. I had some stupid DNS problems and couldn't recieve email the past day and a half.

I ordered my empeg on Sunday morning, and got shipping confirmation on Tuesday (I assume they didn't get the order until Monday morning... Even Rob has to sleep sometimes)

I received the empeg on Wednesday morning at 9:55 and change.

Some clients have faced delays this week - we've been out of 36Gb players, and 12Gb Blue players. A metalwork contractor failed to meet a deadline which halted our production line for several days.

We're getting stock in today, which should clear the backlog.

Saaaweeeeet. Thanks a million for the updates Rob, it's much appreciated. That'll give me all weekend to get the ID3 tags in order...heheh. Looks like 12GB Blue is gonna be the most popular.. what are the stats on that so far as to what the most popular configs are?

So I called FedEx and before being transfered into oblivion I was told that the FCC Clearence was missing for my package. Anybody know what this means and if Empeg or I should be dealing with it?

Thanks,

Argghhh, another call to fedex and...

FCC Declaration Missing
Description Of Goods Required

A customs agent is supposed to get back to me, but it sounds like they don't work weekends. I also sent an email to sales@empeg. I hope I am not SOL until the empeg crew gets back to work on Tuesday. Rob, are you still around? Any words of wisdom?

*Sigh*. This is the usual thing - the empeg actually has no less than 3 (I seem to remember) copies of the FCC declaration, and a description of the unit specifically for customs.

Problem is, these are *on the package*. Customs never see the package, and Fedex fax copies of these forms to the customs people. The correct translation is "fedex has lost the paperwork somewhere" - I believe Rob had a talk to fedex on Friday about how to stop this from happening.

Hmm, I believe Rob claimed it was 4 somewhere else. So Hugo, do you think I am out of luck until Tuesday or is someone going to be in at Empeg on Monday who may be able to assist?

Thanks,
Mike

I suspect even if there is someone in on monday, they won't be able to help as out contacts at Fedex UK won't be there - it's a national holiday, and so everywhere is closed...

Ahhh, I see. Pesky holiday. Well do I at least get the record for longest wait time after placing order for empeg? Will be two weeks on monday (Wells Fargo's fault, not Empegs). The anxiety is getting a little out of control.

Okay, i just got off the phone with Fed-Ex, and here's the story...

According to Lisa Jones of Intl' shipping...Customs did a random pull (which seems odd since so many others on the BBS must have been 'randomly pulled') on my package and couldn't find the FCC clearance. So i described what it was.
"it's a car stereo of sorts."
"Oh.....(long pause)... cause it says here something about a processor..."
"Yeah, it's a digital music player...it is actually a computer with a processor and hard drive that plays digital music files."
"Okay, well lemme fax you a customs form. All we need is your importer ID, then i will fax customs the info."

That basically means your social security number or tax ID if you are a business. So, she faxed me the form, i faxed it back, and according to her if customs clears it tonight, i will have it tomorrow morning.

So, here's what i don't understand...why the hell did they need my soc. sec. number? What does that provide them that makes it magically clear customs? I'm assuming that she was going to fax customs the FCC information along with the form i filled out, but what if i hadn't have called? Shouldn't Fed-Ex have called me? I don't know, the whole thing is just strange, but whateva..I'm getting it soon regardless.

WORD TO THE WISE... call Fed-Ex intl' and tell them what's going on the second your shipment comes up in a "regulatory clearance delay". The process is easy to get around if you just get on them about it. Hopefully at least... i'll inform if anything changes.

Cripes... I got a call from FedEX about my Empeg. It's still in Memphis (home of Elvis and the ancient greeks.) The Nice Lady faxed me a Importer ID Input Record and a scary FCC form. More accurately a "Statement regarding the importation of Radio Frequency Devices capable of causing harmful interference." The only part of which I understand is where it says I'm going to rot in jail if the information is incorrect...

Wheee... Anyone know what I should call this thing?

Yeah, I tried calling fedex international (again) too. Got someone there to fill out the FCC form for me, but not luck so far. Still sitting in Memphis. The fedex dude said they did not need my SSN since the package value was under $2k. I gave them a description of the empeg and he was going to forward the paperwork to customs.. I suspect it is going to continue to sit in Memphis until someone from empeg gets a hold of them :-(

Interesting. The fedex/customs dude filled out the FCC form for me (with some info I provided) and said it did not even need a signature! Of course the package is still sitting in Memphis so lots of good that did.

Well, I ordered the middle of last week... Got a "we got your order" notice on Friday... Then I guess there was a holiday yesterday... No shipping confirmation or charge on my card yet. I'm hoping they didn't run out of 18GB blue models, it seems to be a popular flavor.

Hrm. I must be lucky. I live in Round Rock, TX, and had no delay whatsoever. In fact, I was a little worried since I was going on vacation and Friday was the last day that I would have been here. But, it shipped on Thursday nite and I received it Friday morning. I think its neat that it can be overnited from so far away so quickly. I'm glad I live west of England .

Ya, Rob knows, and they faxed more paperwork today, evidently. I'm in Dallas, so hopefully they can get it to me the same day it clears.

I was counting the hours, now I've almost forgot its coming.

Things are running a bit slower than normal as both Rob and Daniel are on holiday; you should be able to get a response from rob@empeg.com (whose email is currently being answered by David). Bank transfers sometimes take ages (we've had ones that took 3 weeks from the USA).

How can a bank transfer be slower than snail mail. Besides my bank checked today 9-1 and they confirmed the transfer to the Barclay UK bank on 8-23. So what's the hold up. Than is ten days.

How can a bank transfer be slower than snail mail.

Heh. The question you should be asking is: How do banks even manage to function at all with the cobbled-together, bailing-wire-and-tape systems they use to transact their business. You should see how much training the employees have to go through every time they do a system changeover.

Knowing the way banks work, your wired money probably just got routed to the wrong account. Probably to somebody named "Tuttle".

(Bonus point to identify that last reference.)

Some US banking systems are totally amazing - because there are so many small banks, the system appears to be totally manual...

If the money has arrived, check with rob@empeg.com - he will know what is going on. Generally, when we receive transfers we get a fax from our bank, but this has been known not to arrive and we only find out about it later...

It has nothing to do with snailmail - if you sent a US personal cheque it would take about 3 weeks to clear AFTER we deposited it into our account.

As I said, some US transfers have taken as long as 3 weeks, although most come through within a few days. The problem isn't at our end - whatever other numerous problems the UK banking system may have, the general level of electronic funds automation is very good. The problem is, the US banking system is so fragmented (thanks to 60 year old legislation) that the hundreds of small banks have, generally, not bought in to international connectivity schemes. There's barely any inter-state connectivity for that matter!

Therefore a US transfer generally involves telexing details for processing by humans, which is slowed up by the time difference and, sometimes, by simple human error or inefficiency.

Just because the funds have left your account, does NOT mean that they are cleared into ours. I often wonder which organisation is benefiting from the interest on all these delayed transactions.

In your particular case, I'll check on Monday whether we have received your funds. A transfer was received just before I left on Friday, so that could be yours. When your goods are dispatched, I'll include a copy of the transfer advice just to prove that we haven't sat on your money for two weeks!

Luckily almost all clients pay by credit card, which can be authorised within minutes.

Rob

The best, I would say (and the competition is tough).

BTW, for those with wire transfer problems: it generally helps if you pay in a major bank that has direct correspodent relationship with empeg's bank, demand a copy of S.W.I.F.T. slip and fax it to empeg if delay develops. (S.W.I.F.T. is glorified encrypted messaging system used for interbank money transfer.) Banks like to 'play' with other people's money for few days...

Just because the funds have left your account, does NOT mean that they are cleared into ours. I often wonder which organisation is benefiting from the interest on all these delayed transactions.

It's not restricted to US>UK transfers, either. A friend of mine got a little upset when a UK bank 'lost' 70,000 UKP for more than 10 days transferring it from his UK account to his French bank.

One of the many odd things about this event was that the UK bank had confirmed delivery to the correct French account number, but the French bank hadn't seen a trace of the funds.

It eventually turned out that they had, instead of sending it across the Channel, sent it to another account in the same bank!

Even then, he was suspicious of why it had taken a week to go from one account number to another, and 10 days or so for them to find it. What's the interest on 70 grand per week? Multiplied by however many such 'accidents' occur?

Or am I just being cynical again?

Patrick

It makes me proud to see that the members of this BBS appreciate good filmmaking.

Although I think that Brazil is a cartoonish view of it, you'd be surprised how similar it is to the way bank and government systems really work.

OK, I admit it, I am clueless. What are you folks talking about? (In my defense, I must confess that I haven't set foot in a movie theatre or rented a videotape in the past 20 years or so. Just a grumpy old curmudgeon, I guess)

Terry Gilliam's masterpiece Brazil. The hero is a small wheel in some kind of cross botween Kafka's Process, Orwell's 1984 and a satire on contemporary bureaucracy. Due to computer error he becomes prosecuted, and is helped by a guerilla plumber... Computer terminals look like ancient Remington typewriters with miniature, open b/w CRT with large Fresnell lenses in front. Be sure to rent it (if possible, European edition, American was considerably watered down).

Cheers!

Well, even the ones you rent are the European editions. The "American" edition you refer to was a re-edit (not by Terry) for broadcast television that had a "happy" ending. That one is actually pretty hard to find (thank goodness).

The best way to see it is via the Criterion Collection DVD release. It's a 3-disc set, and it includes both Terry's original edit, and the broadcast television edit that Terry had nothing to do with.

The hero is a small wheel in some kind of cross botween Kafka's Process, Orwell's 1984 and a satire on contemporary bureaucracy. Due to computer error he becomes prosecuted, and is helped by a guerilla plumber...

... played in a cameo role by Robert DeNiro: "Remember, we're all in this together."

Actually, to clarify, the hero is a clerk who discovers the error after the victim of the error is already dead. It turns out that the very person they were trying to prosecute is the guerilla plumber. The error comes up because of a typo: the last name "Buttle" gets swapped for "Tuttle", and a man loses his life because of it. I have a co-worker named Tuttle who's never seen the film, and has been queried by more than one Gilliam fan about it.

There's a neat commentary track by Gilliam on the Criterion DVD. He describes how he originally wanted that "typo" at the beginning of the film to come about. His vision was to have a huge special effects shot of a tiny beetle in the Brazilian rain forest. The beetle is disturbed by these huge machines which gobble up the trees. The camera follows the beetle into the air, while it flies by the factory which processes the trees into paper. Then it follows the paper to where it's turned into a printed newspaper. Then the newspaper is delivered to the office where the teletype machine is running. The beetle flies into the office, where a man kills it with the newspaper, it falls into the teletype machine, and the typo is generated. Only the very last part actually made it into production (they didn't have the budget for that special effects shot).

You did get the Criterion release, right? There's a standard DVD release as well that's not the special 3-disc set. Assuming you got the right one, definitely check out the commentary track by Gilliam. Very interesting.

My only complaint about both DVD releases is that they're not anamorphic.

"The "American" edition you refer to was a re-edit (not by Terry) for broadcast television that had a "happy" ending."

If I may just Geek-out here for a second. This is not entirely true. There was the "love conquers all" version made for TV, that had a happy ending. But there was as well an American theatrical release version that was only subtly different than the UK version. Namely the credits with Sam fading into the clouds at the end... Oh, and the "My God, it works" punchline. I bought the Criterion Collection version of Brazil (possibly my favorite movie ever) and have to agree. It's a must for any fan.

In fact the clincher for me was in the inclusion of the "love conquers all" disc. In college, I had a small party to celebrte the airing of my favorite movie on broadcast TV. Imagine my horror to discover that not only was it edited for TV, they added huge sections of plot! Changing the whole story! Arggg!

For years afterwards I was livid over that. Many I have told of this attrocity, but few have witnessed it. Now, thanks to Criterion, I have 3 DVD's of Brazil history... The only thing that would have made this collection better would be the inclusion of the US theatrical release version, but perhaps that would have been overkill...

Now if they would just start releasing the David Lynch catalogue...

Funny that so many people here are also Brazil nuts. Wonder what makes so many geeks fans of Gilliam-esque movies... Have you guys checked out Caro and Jeunet's catalog as well? They made movies like "City of Lost Children" or "La Cité des enfants perdus" and "Delicatessen". Very Gilliam-esque (visual in that sort of way).

If you haven't, I recommend it.

By all means! However, as in music, my cinematographical tastes are quite ecclectic. Pitty we will have to wait several years for storage to grow large and cheap enough for video version of some of empeg's OEM projects...

Yup, that's the one. Among the first things I bought to go with my DVD player.

From the other tangent on this thread: I haven't stumbled across "City of Lost Children" in a video store yet, I may just have to break down and order it from Amazon. Being a Gilliam fan, I'm very interested in seeing it.
