I think that's likely. The general consensus is that - surprise surprise - these devices are ignoring the USB spec in order to save a few pennies. It's not even the cheapest stuff either. I paid quite a bit for the Aqara FP2 presence sensor (~$75), and that has this problem. Did you check the reddit thread I posted above? It has some good responses.

I've found that power adapters with a built in USB cable will also work. I've repurposed several Unifi 5V AC adapters to use with devices like this that give me trouble.
