Bumping and old thread here- because I finally picked this up on Blu Ray for a second viewing and I have to say, this might be my favorite movie ever (then again, it's probably just the recent rush of seeing it and after time I'll figure out where it really belongs in my list of favorites). It was even better the second time than the first, and I honestly can't wait to watch it again. It's like Nolan took three of my favorite films (Memento, The Matrix, and Ocean's 11- yes, really any heist film, but that one is such good fun!) and combined them all into one movie, adding a dash of Bond to make it that much sweeter.
With the Batman movies, this movie, and Memento, Nolan is quickly becoming the "Rush" of movies for me. It's like he's on a whole different level from everyone else doing it.
Anyway, reading back through your post from months ago, Dignan, I wanted to respond:
I would have preferred if he hadn't ended the movie with the top gimmick, because I don't think it was necessary. I get what he was going for, but I don't think he needed to do it.
Personally, I don't think the top falls. It already spins for too long by the time the camera goes to black, IMO. I don't, however, think that the whole movie was a dream. I just think he ended in limbo.
After a second viewing, it's clear to me that the top was going to fall and he'd made it back to reality. I didn't catch the strength of the theme the first time around that Cobb was constantly questioning himself and reality due to his guilt- this is the reason for his manic obsession with spinning the top every chance he got. But by the last scene, he'd realized he couldn't hold on to his wife or the guilt, and he was released from his constant fear of living in a dreamworld.
We DO see the top wobble at the end, which it never did in the dream state- but Cobb doesn't see this because he doesn't need to. He knows where he is and that he's finally released from his guilt.
Of course, it's all up for interpretation, but a lot of the dialog in the movie supports this, imo.
Anyway, awesome movie.
