All of my files are VBR, and I have never seen this kind of behavior. Also, I would expect this kind of thing to happen all of the time, not just in the car.

What about your serial connector on the sled - could it be making contact somewhere, pumping noise into the command stream?

Postscript - Can you upload a CBR file, just to eliminate all of the VBR considerations? Also, have you tried a memory test?
