There is no font smaller than the small font currently used on Now+Next (count the pixels!). There's only room for three lines of small font and one line of
"medium" font (the code calls it that, but the "large" font is nowhere actually used, so "medium" is the largest size you get).

I get what you're saying, I guess 4-5 pixels is as small as it gets. At the same time, I don't want the last track taking my attention from what's currently playing when I glance at the screen. What about putting the last track at the top of the screen in a darker shade? That way, it'd be:

Last Track (small, dim)
Current Artist:Track (Medium, bright)
Next (small, bright)
Next+1 (small, bright)

How do you think that'd look?
