1. What are the best DirecTV deals going now?
Check www.americansatellite.com, they where as cheap as anybody when I bought my system a few months back and I had no complaints.

2. I understand there is a slightly bigger oval dish for DirecTV that is needed for some services. I know it's required for HDTV broadcasts (I'm not on HDTV yet) but I also read somewhere that it's required to pick up local channels. True? If so, the above deal is just for a regular dish, so I'd have to look elsewhere.
False. The oval dish is needed for HDTV, various ethnic channels, and a few other oddballs. I have the old-school dish (they need to face slightly different directions and I don't have line of site for the oval) and I get locals just fine. Still, you might want to go ahead with the oval so your future proofed rather than doing the install twice.

3. I have two ReplayTVs, and am not willing to give them up for a DirecTiVo or similar. So I need a DirecTV receiver that has serial input so I can control it with my ReplayTV. Do all DTV receivers have serial input? Most of them?
Reconsider! DirecTiVo is a very good thing
Dunno the answer to your actual question.

4. Any particular brands of receiver I should look for? Other than brand name, what are the things that differentiate the various DTV receivers?
Here is one comparison chart. I'd look at Hughes personally, but I'm not that familiar with the alternatives.

5. Any reason I should let them install for me? I am sure I can handle installation myself, but are there any advantages to letting them do it?
Do you enjoy having holes poked into your house in random inappropriate spots, having cable run poorly, having to have someone come out multiple times? If not I'd do it yourself.

Edit: damn I think there is an echo in here. Too slow today I guess...
