Well - Have a thought at this:

You've 6, 12, 18 or 36 GB on the Mk2. (er even more if you upgrade it)
I've got a 12 GB Mk2 and it's full with 2803 songs.

I also thought about just ripping the best songs of all CD's I have. But finally I ended up with ripping the whole CD cause it's not too much space waisted. After having enough mp3's I burn them on a data CD. Now I have about 40+ mp3 CD's. And I put just some 15 or something on the Mk2 (cause there's no more space left). But I'd like to put all of my songs on the Mk2. Even if I don't listen to every song and I sometimes skip some songs I don't like - But maybe sometime I'd like to listen to a very special song (quite easy to find if the ID3-tags are filled correct) which I didn't think of before just because it comes to my mind. And then I have it there

Maybe it'd be better to not be so very selective. But it's your choice.
