My Dell Inspiron 8000 has the slots right by the processor as well. I've never had a card quit due to it overheating though. This laptop weighs a tonne, is really massive, pumps out an incredible amount of heat and the two fans in it are loud as hell. But it was the best last year when I bought it and I've had to live with these annoying problems ever since. Bleh

Has anybody tried out those higher power 802.11b cards? I think Senao (sp?) make one that does 200mA. Probably not a good thing to have on your lap though...
I've got a bunch of Orinoco silver cards and some PrismII clone cards. In the end I've used the PrismII clones as they do 104 bit WEP as standard and I can't actually find anybody that knows how to convert the silver cards into gold cards without a Mac. I know 104 bit WEP is pretty useless but I might as well use it anyway and it's still better than 40 bit WEP..
