Is there something we can download & try out already, or how far did you come by now ?

Sorry, it's still deep in the development phase and far from any distributable form. There's a lot of hacking it still requires in order to work starting from the kernel and even I know some of you would be willing going through it, I don't feel comfortable releasing it at this point - but let's see how it will develop in the future, maybe something some day . Besides I've found & implemented working map projection only for Finland for the time being.

Which NMEA sentences does your proggie need ?? GGA ? VTG ??

Mainly $GPRMC, $GPGGA, and $PGRMT (those are found atleast from Garmin receivers).
